Mau managed to get her down to the cell unseen.
âNormally we would need to go through the warden, but things are in turmoil with the Chief Justice overseeing the internal inquiry until Director Mac Cléirigh arrives,â Mau explained. âWe have a head jailer but I donât trust him.â She stopped before she unlocked the last set of doors. âWith that shower of savages out front, most everyone has had to stand post up there.â
âI appreciate this, Mau,â Mickey said, patting her on the shoulder. She looked to her right and saw a cot. There were at least 6 different rifles lying on the bed and one double barrelled shotgun. There were several boxes of ammo and two more automatic handguns primed and ready to go, with several clips.
âMau, you canât be the only one down here guarding him. At least have someone relieve youâ¦from your little arsenal here.â Mickey looked back at her and Mau tipped back her cap. Mickey noted she wore two holsters, both holding large handguns she was pretty sure were both magnums like Betty.
âI have something to tell you, bhuanchara. Wouldnât say it in front of the dames.â
âWhat is it, buddy beau?â Mickey asked, watching her face and seeing a haunted look.
âIt was himselfâ¦dressed as the old bird.â She motioned with her head back toward the cells.
Mickey blinked, shocked. âHe told you that?â She put her hand on Mauâs shoulder.
âNot to myself directly. They had a bit of trouble getting him into the striped suit. I told them they didnât have to be gentle. He came at them, was spitting on them and kicking up a fuss. So when Clancey and Boyle were throwing irons on his ankles, I was around the corner from the holding area and he said it.â Mau swallowed.
Mickey looked her in the eye. âHe canât hurt her, Mau. He is never getting out of jail, I promise you. What did he say?â
âSaid they didnât know who they were dealing with. That they had better leave well enough alone or he would kill them and everyone they loved. Knew then, I didâ¦â Mau swallowed again. Her eyes were glassed over.
âYou trust me, right?â Mickey asked.
âI do⦠Yes, I do.â Mau seemed to come out of it and return Mickeyâs gaze. âHeâs in a restricted confinement cell so there is no one down here to interact with thatâ¦sleeveen. Iâll be stayinâ right here. You shout andâ¦â
âYouâll bring the Badb, the Macha, and the Morrigan,â Mickey finished for her.
Mau smiled, then asked, âIâve no need to worry, have I, Mick? I know youâre packing,â she said as she opened the last set of doors.
âNo, Mau, you have my word,â Mickey said, shaking her hand. She stepped past her, reaching inside her jacket as she walked down the corridor.
âLast cell on the right. I will release the door when you are in front of it.â
She walked slowly, her foot steps were much slower than her heart and frankly, much quieter. She stopped and buttoned her jacket back up at the solid steel door.
